Constructive Criticism exhibition ran for a month at Kingston Art Group (KAG) Gallery in 2017 as part of Hull City of Culture Programme. The show was with Geoff Keen and Jamie Gibson. In my paintings I was exploring an idea of building up work through intuitive marks and gestures, and still trying to find a visual space that made sense and felt believable. I had recently found the Arena film of John Hoyland working on a painting 6 days in September and was struck by how he experienced the act of painting, his mannerisms, the requirement to be present, how work progresses when its both in and out of your control and how performative making this type of work is. In a separate room I showed the film on a perpetual loop, and the three of us worked on a large canvas collaboratively.
